Most websites don't have a job.
That is the real problem with nearly every site we are asked to replace. Somebody built it. It has pages, and the pages have words on them. But nobody ever decided what it was supposed to do: who it was for, what that person needed to find, and what was supposed to happen next.
You can usually tell within ten seconds. The homepage lists services in no particular order. Every page ends without telling you what to do. A website with no goal can still look good. It just can’t work, because working means something specific happened that would not have happened otherwise.
How we work
How we build a website that works.
- 01
Who it is for
Not “customers,” the actual person. A contractor pricing a job at seven in the morning needs something different from a county administrator working through a procurement list.
- 02
What it is for
One primary outcome: a phone call, a quote request, a filled-in form. Everything on the site either serves that outcome or gets cut, which is how a site ends up shorter and better.
- 03
How people get there
Most people don’t arrive on your homepage. They land on whatever page answers their question, and that page has to carry them the rest of the way on its own.
- 04
Design and build
By now the hard decisions are made, so the design solves a defined problem instead of decorating an undefined one. That is also why we don’t quote a website by the page.
What a website costs in Wilmington.
Custom websites start at
$6,500
Most agencies won’t publish a number, which makes comparing three of them almost impossible. We would rather you know before you spend an afternoon finding out.
What moves the price is scope: how many pages, whether you need an online store, whether there is a system behind it, and whether the content exists yet or has to be written. If you need three pages and a contact form and you are not trying to get found in search, a template will serve you, and we will tell you so.
Custom, owned and yours to edit.
Custom, not a template
A template is a pre-built design you pour your business into. Custom means the structure comes from what your business actually does. Sell out of eight locations, and the site is built around eight locations.
You own it
The domain, the site, the content and the files are yours. We build on WordPress, so you can move it or hand it to anyone, whenever you want. Nothing is held hostage.
You can edit it
Text, images, staff, locations and prices are built so you can change them without calling us. If you would rather not touch any of it, we look after sites for a monthly fee.
Work
Websites we have built.
Guy C. Lee
A hundred-year-old building materials supplier with eight locations across the Carolinas. The old site said none of that, and there was no written content to start from, so we wrote it: every product line, every location and the company’s own history.
Other Wilmington and southeastern North Carolina sites include Hibachi Bistro, Blockade Runner Resort, Parker’s Collision Center, Auto Wholesale Tire and Service, Quality Chemical Laboratories, Onslow Bay Boatworks, Clarendon Properties and Vinedresser Lawn & Landscape. A selection is below, and more is in our portfolio.
Still here when your site needs a change.
The most common reason people call us about a website is that the last one was built by somebody who can no longer be reached. No login, no files, nobody who knows how it works. Ford Design Group has been in Wilmington since 1992, so when your site needs changing in five years, there is still a studio to call and it still has your files.
We are a design studio first: branding, logos, print, apparel and websites under one roof. Your website matches the rest of how your business looks, because the same people designed all of it. When you want to be found as well as seen, we also offer SEO services.
